Works to start in Attercliffe and the city centre
We will shortly be starting work on our Connecting Sheffield Darnall-Attercliffe-City Centre project. The work will begin on Monday 16th February in two locations:
- Attercliffe Road between Staniforth Road and Worksop Road
- Furnival Road area of Derek Dooley Way
Attercliffe Road between Staniforth Road and Worksop Road
A diversion will be in place for traffic heading towards the city centre from the junction with Newhall Road so we can work safely to make the upgrades to Attercliffe high street. An alternative cycle route will also be in place for cyclists travelling southbound.
Throughout the works, businesses along Attercliffe Road will be open as usual along with the council owned car parks off of the high street.
Signage will be in place to explain the diversions, closures and provide more information on the project throughout the works.
Furnival Road area of Derek Dooley Way
The following changes will be put in place to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and those working on the project:
Derek Dooley Way: Two narrow traffic lanes will operate in each direction through the junction. Night-time works ware currently planned towards the end of March 2026, during which there will be one traffic lane in each direction on Derek Dooley Way. Further information will be provided closer to the time
Furnival Road (south of the junction): Permanently closed to northbound traffic between the junction of Quayside House and Derek Dooley Way. Vehicles will still be able to get to the car parks on Furnival Road from the Inner Ring Road, but the exit from the car parks will be via Exchange Place and Park Square Roundabout.
Left turn from Derek Dooley Way into Furnival Road (north of the junction): Permanently closed. Access will be maintained via Savile Street, Sutherland Street, Leveson Street, Effingham Road and Effingham Street.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists: Will be maintained, although cyclists may occasionally need to dismount.
Taxi and bus cut-through: Southbound from Furnival Road across Derek Dooley Way will be permanently closed. Access to the city centre will be maintained via Park Square Roundabout.
We are working on Attercliffe Road between Staniforth Road and Worksop Road to make Darnall and Attercliffe safer, greener and easier to travel around.
This phase of works will take around 15 weeks, with teams on site Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 5pm. So we can work safely to make the upgrades, we’ve had to close some routes but a diversion is in place for anyone heading towards the city centre.
There are signs in the area to explain diversions, closures and parking restrictions.
When the work is completed, there will be improved routes to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier. The upgrades will make journeys more reliable for everyone. These improvements are part of a long term effort to make local streets more welcoming, support people to walk, wheel and cycle and to strengthen links between Darnall, Attercliffe in an term effort to make local streets more welcoming, support people to walk, wheel and cycle and to strengthen links between Darnall, Attercliffe and the city centre.

Data collection surveys
Surveys have recently taken place along the Darnall-Attercliffe route to understand the number of people that currently walk and cycle at various points along the scheme. The surveys will help shape how an active travel scheme could look. We will only use the footage we capture to determine numbers, we won’t record any personal information like faces or number plates.
This data collection exercise is one of the first stages of the project that will include further local consultation and engagement on the designs later-on in the year.
