Works at Wilfrid Road and Worksop Road - November 2026
As part of the Connecting Sheffield: Darnall – Attercliffe – City Centre project, we are improving streets to make them safer, greener and more welcoming for everyone.
The changes aim to support regeneration in the area, safer journeys and sustainable travel for local people, and will give you more choice in how you travel, whether you’re walking, wheeling, cycling or travelling by bus.
Works on Worksop Road
The next phase of works along Worksop Road is scheduled to begin on, or shortly after, Monday 9 November, for approximately 12 weeks.
The works will include improvements to the eastbound road between Attercliffe Road and Chippingham Street, and will be carried out Monday to Friday, between 7am and 4pm, weather permitting. Works include:
- Improvements to the road, footways and kerbs
- Improvements to crossing points
- New paving and kerbing across side-road junctions
Traffic will be maintained in each direction via two narrow lanes while the work takes place.
Temporary traffic signals will be used during some stages. Parking will not be suspended along the whole route at once, but in phases as the works progress.
Bootle Street, Leeds Road and Chippingham Street will be temporarily closed at different stages of the works, with advance notice and diversion routes provided ahead of each closure.
Maintaining access and minimising disruption
Access to properties and businesses will be maintained, including access between Attercliffe Road and Oasis Academy Don Valley on the eastbound side. Some routes may be temporarily diverted to allow the work to be completed safely.
Works on Wilfrid Road
We’ll be coming to Wilfrid Road to carry out improvements to the junction and footway area between Wilfrid Road and Shirland Lane.
These works will take place on, or shortly after, Wednesday 11 November from 7am until 4pm, for approximately seven weeks. The works involve improvements to the footway, kerbing, signage and road markings and will include:
- Raised crossings at Wilfrid Road and Shirland Lane, to slow down traffic and make it easier and safer for people to cross the road
- An upgraded passage between Shirland Lane and Wilfrid Road to a segregated cycle track and footway, to make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle
Maintaining access and minimising disruption
The works will be completed in phases to minimise disruption. Three-way temporary traffic signals will be used at certain stages at the junction with Shirland Lane. A temporary closure of Shirland Lane will also be required to complete the improvements, with advance notice and diversion information to be provided.
Access to properties and businesses will be maintained throughout the works
Keeping you informed
Advance notice signs will be placed in the area before works start.
We understand these changes may require some adjustment, but they are necessary to ensure work can be carried out safely.
We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we complete these improvements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What will the impact on vehicles travelling along Worksop Road be?
Worksop Road will remain open to traffic in both directions throughout the works. For most of the construction period, there will be one narrow lane in each direction.
Some on-street parking will need to be temporarily removed to provide enough space for traffic to continue travelling safely in both directions.
Temporary traffic lights may also be used on short sections of the road while parts of the work are completed. Drivers may need to allow additional time for their journeys.
Will there be any road closures or diversion routes during the works?
There will be no permanent road closures as part of these works. However, some side roads, including Bootle Street and Leeds Road, may need to close temporarily while work takes place across their junctions, and to carry out works safely.
Clearly signed diversion routes will be put in place whenever a temporary closure is required.
Will loading and deliveries for businesses be affected?
Businesses will continue to be able to receive deliveries during the works. However, some on-street parking on Worksop Road will need to be temporarily removed so that traffic can continue to travel in both directions.
Where appropriate, deliveries can take place from nearby side streets. Loading and unloading can take place on double yellow lines where this is permitted and the vehicle is only stopped for the time needed to make the delivery or collection.
Dedicated loading bays are also planned on Worksop Road between Attercliffe Road and Leeds Road as part of the proposed red route arrangements.
We understand that construction work can be concerning for local businesses. Access to businesses will be maintained, and the site team will work with businesses to understand any particular delivery or collection requirements. Where difficulties arise, the team will do everything reasonably possible to reduce disruption and help businesses continue operating.
Will parking be affected during the works?
Yes. Some on-street parking will need to be temporarily removed so that traffic can continue to travel safely in both directions while the work takes place.
Some parking spaces on Worksop Road will also be removed permanently to provide space for the new segregated cycle track. The Council is looking at opportunities to provide alternative on-street parking nearby. Any proposed changes would be advertised through a Traffic Regulation Order and would be subject to statutory consultation. Further information will be provided when the consultation dates are confirmed.
Where possible, people are encouraged to consider walking, wheeling, cycling or travelling by bus or Supertram. Attercliffe tram stop is a short walk from Worksop Road.
We recognise that some people may still need to drive. Free council-run car parks are available nearby on:
- Shortridge Street
- Zion Lane
- Bodmin Street
- Baltic Road
- Kimberley Street
Will bus services or bus stops be affected during the works?
There may be temporary changes to some bus services or bus stops while the works take place. Please check the latest information from Travel South Yorkshire before travelling.
Will pedestrian routes be affected during the works?
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works, although short temporary diversions may be needed in some locations so that work can be carried out safely.
As part of the improvements, the existing zebra crossing near Oasis Academy will be replaced with a signal-controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
Will emergency services still be able to access the area?
Yes. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times. Some routes may change during the works, but access will always be provided.
Are there any other works planned on Worksop Road?
The work is being completed on one side of Worksop Road at a time to help reduce disruption and keep traffic moving.
The works beginning in November 2026 cover the northern side of Worksop Road between Attercliffe Road and Chippingham Street. Once this has been completed, work will move to the southern side, progressing from Chippingham Street towards Attercliffe Road.
Work on the southern side is currently scheduled to begin in March 2027 and be completed by July 2027. Regular updates will be provided throughout the construction period.
