Work on Derek Dooley Way - May 2026

As part of our Connecting Sheffield: Darnall–Attercliffe–City Centre project, which is improving transport links between Darnall, Attercliffe and the Lower Don Valley and the city centre, we will soon be starting work to create a right turn lane from Derek Dooley Way to Furnival Road / Effingham Road.

What’s happening?

From 8pm on Saturday 9 May to 6am on Sunday 10 May, Derek Dooley Way will be closed overnight in both directions between Sheffield Parkway and Wicker. This is so we can put traffic management in place for night working to create the right turn. This will begin on Monday 11 May, for around 15 weeks. We expect this phase of work to be complete by the end of August.

Doing the work overnight allows us to reduce disruption for people travelling during the day along this busy route, and it also means our teams can work more safely. We will work from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.

We will also continue working over the weekends from Saturday 16 May. This will mean work can progress more quickly. Because there tend to be lower traffic volumes at the weekend, we will work during the day on Saturdays and Sundays, from 7.30am to 4pm.

Diversion routes – Saturday 9 May

Traffic will be diverted via the following signed diversion route:

Savile Street – Attercliffe Road – Staniforth Road – Woodbourn Road – Cricket Inn Road / Broad Street – Park Square roundabout.

You will still be able to access Quays Hotels via Park Square roundabout and Furnival Road.

Travelling in the area from Monday 11 May

Once the traffic management is in place, there will be two narrow traffic lanes running in both directions during the day. While we are working overnight and at weekends, one traffic lane will run in each direction.

Please take extra care during roadworks. Allow more time for your journey, follow signed diversion routes, and drive within the speed limit to help keep everyone safe.
