Mount Pleasant Park’s Playground is a much-valued space but is now run down and requiring an update. Working in partnership with Sharrow Community Forum (SCF), Parks and Countryside have started the playground redesign to meet the needs of local children and families with the aim of improving the quality of the space to positively benefit users' health and wellbeing. A 2022 masterplan co-ordinated by SCF was followed with a design report by Urban Wilderness. This report is being used to guide plans for the new playground. The project will provide better play opportunities that are more accessible, inclusive and engaging.

The project will provide better play opportunities that are more accessible, inclusive and engaging. Other improvements identfied in the masterplan have already been implemented;

  • Improved perceptions of safety in the park by opening sight lines (CIL funded)

  • Improving lighting & CCTV across the site (Safer Streets funded)

  • SCF have secured Youth Investment Funding (YIF) to transform the Highfield Adventure Playground building in Mount Pleasant Park including creating a kiosk/café and public toilet (a priority for the community). This project aims to deliver the park play improvements to transform the space alongside the YIF improvements. *The new ADVENTURES building will formally be opened in July 25!*

The playground improvements will bring other benefits including;

  • Better connection between the adventure playground, food kiosk/toilets, park playground and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA)
  • A design providing a positive interface between the playground and wider park, including providing a complementary setting to the community hub
  • Provision of accessible, inclusive & collaborative play
  • Links with the kiosk area and adjacent facilities
  • Skills development and collaborative play opportunities that encourage repeat visits

    A separate revenue funded Evaluation and Engagement strand of work will be led by SCF to support and enhance the project’s development, delivery and ongoing use.

    In April 2024 Parks and Countryside held a workshop with two YR6 classes to get their feedback on the evolving playground designs and play equipment. Emily, the Landscape Architect who is working on this project joined Sarah, the Parks Project Officer to show the children the plans and ask them how they would prioritise the budget available if they were in charge of the money. The session was brilliant, with all the children engaged and contribruting their ideas. Another session is planned this summer to update the children on a final design.
