Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre New Builds

Sheffield City Council are committed to providing opportunities for everyone to move more and lead a more active lifestyle, helping to reduce health inequalities across the city. As part of our commitments in Sheffield’s Sport and Leisure Strategy, the Council is investing in leisure facilities to ensure they are modern, welcoming, accessible, inclusive, and support our ambitions to reduce our environmental impact.

As part of this investment, Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre are due to be rebuilt and we are working closely with our new operator, Everyone Active, to develop this work in partnership.

The construction of the new Springs Leisure Centre, due to be renamed the Uriah Rennie Leisure Centre, will begin November 2026 with the new building expected to be complete in September 2028. Springs Leisure Centre to be renamed in honour of Sheffield legend Uriah Rennie | Sheffield City Council

The construction of the new Concord Sports Centre is expected to begin in Summer 2027 with completion anticipated autumn 2029. The new centres are planned to be built on adjacent land, allowing the existing centres to remain open until the new facilities are ready.

The plans for the new leisure centres have been shaped by a range of research, feedback, and expert guidance to help us create a centre that works for everyone.

Here’s what we’ve used to develop the proposals

  • A full review of Sheffield’s leisure facilities (2020) – looking at the condition of existing centres and how we can create a more sustainable future for leisure in the city.
  • Facilities Planning Modelling (2020 and 2025) – assessing the supply and demand for leisure facilities across Sheffield and identifying where the greatest need is.
  • Surveys and site assessments – reviewing possible locations and available land for the new centre.
  • Feedback from local communities and stakeholders – gathered during the 2022 consultation on Sheffield’s Sport and Leisure Strategy and 2025 consultation on proposals for each new centre.
  • Sport England guidance – using national best practice on leisure design, active lifestyles, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Lessons from other leisure facilities – learning from what works well elsewhere, both locally and across the country.
