Wheata Woods

Welcome to the Wheata Woods project page.

This page has some general information about Wheata Woods and upcoming information about future volunteer works days.

Wheata Woods general information

Wheata Woods is an ancient woodland in the North of Sheffield. It is a designated Local Nature Reserve and contains several archaeological features, some of which are scheduled monuments.

It is accessible at all times and contains a wide network of footpaths and bridleways that connect onto a larger network trail.

Wheata Woods is proud to have maintained Green Flag status for over a decade (since 2009) . The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised award that is a benchmark for well-managed green space.

The site borders Wharncliffe Woods ( managed by the Forestry Commission ) and Greno Woods ( managed by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust ) to make a large continuous expanse of woodland. A map has been provided in the image section to show the area that Wheata Woods encompasses.

Wheata Woods is managed by Sheffield City Councils Woodland team who work closely with the Grenoside Conservation Society .

A Leaflet about the site with more information can be found on the councils website here;

Typical environmental conservation tasks include;

  • Bramble removal from woodland wildflower areas

Wheata Woods proposed pond project

This year we are hoping to find funding to increase biodiversity in the woodland by creating a pond at the clearing in the woods near the Bower Lane entrance.

The idea is to create a wildlife pond that is rain fed.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

    Thank you for filling out the Wheata Woods visitor survey 2023. This survey will take approximately 5 - 10 mins to complete.  Your feedback will help the council to better understand how visitors use the woodland and help guide improvements for the future.

    At the end of the survey we will ask some equality questions.  It is essential that our services are provided fairly and that they reach the people who need to use them. The monitoring information we collect is vital to this process. It helps us understand who is using our services and who is not, having this information helps us improve services and reduce barriers to access. The information we collect will always be kept confidential and secure.  If you do not wish to answer these question you can choose prefer not to say or leave them blank.
