Wheata Woods
Welcome to the Wheata Woods project page.
This page has some general information about Wheata Woods and upcoming information about future volunteer works days.
Wheata Woods general information
Wheata Woods is an ancient woodland in the North of Sheffield. It is a designated Local Nature Reserve and contains several archaeological features, some of which are scheduled monuments.
It is accessible at all times and contains a wide network of footpaths and bridleways that connect onto a larger network trail.
Wheata Woods is proud to have maintained Green Flag status for over a decade (since 2009) . The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised award that is a benchmark for well-managed green space.
The site borders Wharncliffe Woods ( managed by the Forestry Commission ) and Greno Woods ( managed by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust ) to make a large continuous expanse of woodland. A map has been provided in the image section to show the area that Wheata Woods encompasses.
Wheata Woods is managed by Sheffield City Councils Woodland team who work closely with the Grenoside Conservation Society .
A Leaflet about the site with more information can be found on the councils website here;

Wheata Woods proposed pond project
This year we were successful in installing a 50m2 wildlife pond near the Bower Lane entrance. The pond is settling into the landscape and will take a year or so to do so. In April 2026 native planting will take place.
