Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre Proposals
Sheffield City Council are committed to providing opportunities for everyone to move more and lead a more active lifestyle, helping to reduce health inequalities across the city. As part of our commitments in Sheffield’s Sport and Leisure Strategy, the Council is investing in leisure facilities to ensure they are modern, welcoming, accessible, inclusive, and support our ambitions to reduce our environmental impact.
As part of this investment, Springs Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre are due to be rebuilt and we are working closely with our new operator, Everyone Active, to develop this work in partnership. As part of this process, we are carrying out public engagement in March and April 2025 to update everyone on the plans for these two sites and gather feedback on the proposals.
We anticipate that construction of Springs Leisure Centre will begin in late 2026, with Concord Sports Centre following in late 2027. The new centres are planned to be built on adjacent land, allowing the existing centres to remain open until the new facilities are ready.
The plans for the new leisure centres have been shaped by a range of research, feedback, and expert guidance to help us create a centre that works for everyone.
Here’s what we’ve used to develop the proposals so far:
- A full review of Sheffield’s leisure facilities (2020) – looking at the condition of existing centres and how we can create a more sustainable future for leisure in the city.
- Facilities Planning Modelling (2020 and 2024) – assessing the supply and demand for leisure facilities across Sheffield and identifying where the greatest need is.
- Surveys and site assessments – reviewing possible locations and available land for the new centre.
- Feedback from local communities and stakeholders – gathered during the 2022 consultation on Sheffield’s Sport and Leisure Strategy. This included ideas on investment priorities, making spaces more welcoming, and improving accessibility and inclusivity.
- Sport England guidance – using national best practice on leisure design, active lifestyles, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Lessons from other leisure facilities – learning from what works well elsewhere, both locally and across the country.
Together, this information has helped us create draft proposals that aim to meet local needs, promote active well being, and ensure the new centre is a welcoming space for everyone.
