Consultation has concluded
For far too long issues around periods and the menopause have been brushed under the carpet, seen as a taboo subject that should not be spoken about, but this shouldn’t be the case. These are not just a women’s or girl’s issue, periods and the menopause affect everyone including their family, friends, and work colleagues.
We believe that period and menopause equality is everyone’s business so at a meeting on 2 November 2022, Sheffield City Council's Full Council passed a motion resolving to take action on menopause awareness and period poverty in the city by creating a Charter which sets out how we plan to forge period and menopause equity.
While in this Charter we refer mainly to women and girls, we recognise that the experiences and needs of women and girls are different for many reasons such as due to age, race, disability, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion, or belief, etc. Also, some people who do not identify as women such as non-binary and some trans people also require access to the support and services and will benefit from the Charter. All groups with specific needs and experiences will be considered alongside the differing needs of all women and girls.
The draft of this Charter was submitted to Sheffield City Council's Strategy and Resources Policy Committee on 12th March 2024, you can read this report by clicking here or on the link in the Documents section to the right.
You can read the 10-point Charter in the Documents section, the 10 points are also in the survey.
The Charter will be finalised by incorporating feedback from the survey below.
