In 2023 / 2024 we launched a trial of cycle hangars as part of our active neighbourhood project in Crookes and Walkley. This residential cycle parking project provides a long-term cycle parking solution for those who don’t have the space to store a bike at home. A space in a cycle hangar is charged at an annual subscription fee of £72.

To find out about available cycle rental spaces in Sheffield and to book a space, please visit Falco’s website - Falco manages cycle hangars on our behalf.

Residential cycle parking requests

We’re aiming to expand residential cycle parking across the city to make cycling easier and more accessible.

Currently, there are seven cycle hangars located across Crookes and Walkley with others due to be installed soon. The Council has ambitions to add an extra 14 hangars across the city in the spring, paid for by funding generated from the Clean Air Zone.

If you would like to request a space in a cycle hangar in your local area, please use our interactive map to add a pink pin to show us where you’d like a hangar to go.

We will assess all requests after 31 December 2024.

Residential cycle parking should:

  • be positioned as close to where it is needed as possible
  • maximise safety and security for people and their cycles
  • meet current and future demand for cycle parking
  • avoid creating an obstacle or visibility issue for other people who use the street
  • retain adequate footway space for example for wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs
  • retain adequate road space for larger vehicles such as bin lorries
  • ensure all vehicles can access private properties or businesses, and
  • retain access to properties for people who are registered as disabled.

We usually install residential cycle parking on publicly accessible residential roads and streets. We may also consider provision at major employment sites or visitor destinations where there is a demand for long-term paid cycle parking.

Please be aware that the cycle hangars we currently use require a flat or level area for installation. They cannot be installed on hills or uneven ground.

We can only offer residential cycle parking can only be offered in a controlled parking zone using a Traffic Regulation Order, which will increase the costs to install. We will consider requests made within controlled parking zones as part of an area-wide project, subject to future funding and demand.
