We’re expanding residential cycle parking across the city so people who want to cycle can securely store a bike close to home.
We’ve already trialled eight residential cycle parking hangars across Crookes and Walkley. Now we’re expanding the scheme, thanks to funding from the UK Government to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier, as well as some additional funding generated from the Clean Air Zone.
We received hundreds of requests for cycle hangars from residents across the city, and we’ve identified locations for the new hangars based on these requests. We aim to deliver these in summer 2025.
Based on what we’ve learned from our initial trial and feedback from other cities, cycle parking should:
- be positioned as close to where it's needed as possible
- maximise safety and security for people and their cycles
- meet current and future demand for cycle parking
- avoid creating an obstacle or visibility issue for other people who use the street
- keep footway space for people, including wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs
- keep enough road space for larger vehicles like bin lorries
- ensure all vehicles can access private properties or businesses
- allow access to properties for people who are registered as disabled.
Rental scheme
Cycle hangars provide a long-term cycle parking solution that helps make it easier, quicker, and more convenient to cycle on a regular basis. Each user is allocated their own private space in a hangar for an annual subscription fee of £72.
Residential cycle parking spaces are managed and operated by third-party providers Falco UK and Cyclehoop. Falco and Cyclehoop are responsible for the rental schemes which includes operating websites, back-office systems, dealing with payments, handing data, providing access to the hangars and prioritising waiting lists. They will be your first point of contact for bookings, issues, comments, and questions related to renting a space.
The hangars we plan to install in 2025 will be managed by Cyclehoop. Once hangars are installed and go live, you will be able to book directly on Cyclehoop's website.

Where can we install residential cycle parking?
We usually install residential cycle parking on publicly accessible residential roads and streets, close to where people live.
We may consider hangars at major employment sites or visitor destinations where organisations want to provide long-term paid cycle parking for staff or visitors.
Please be aware that cycle hangars require a flat or level area of hardstanding for installation. We can't install them on hills or uneven ground.
We can only offer residential cycle parking in locations like permit parking zones by advertising changes to traffic restrictions through a full Traffic Regulation Order.
This process takes six to nine months to progress and will increase the cost. We are considering requests made within controlled parking zones as part of further area-wide projects as early as 2026.
What happens next?
After we install the next round of hangars in summer 2025, we’ll explore additional locations in 2026. So we can maximise usage of the hangars, and to enable more people to cycle for more journeys, we will prioritise locations based on:
- the number of requests per location
- proximity and accessibility to residential areas and high-density housing
- proximity to current, planned, or aspirational cycle routes, and
- proximity to the city or district centres.
