City Centre Public Spaces Protection Order

Everyone wants a safe and inviting city centre and Sheffield is working to make sure that its city centre is the very best that it can be, so that local residents and visitors always have positive experiences when they visit.

In the centre of Sheffield, ambitious and exciting plans are coming to fruition and taking shape, all adding to the rich experience that visitors should expect when they visit the city.

Like all major towns and cities, Sheffield does see some unacceptable behaviour in the city centre, and the Council wants to consult with the public about whether or not it should make a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in Sheffield City Centre to help address these issues.

PSPOs are designed to stop individuals or groups of individuals committing anti-social behaviour in a public space.

The aim of the proposed PSPO is to help address issues which can contribute to anti-social behaviour such as drinking alcohol in public, using drugs, and urinating in public.

They can be enforced by issuing Penalty Notices to those found breaking PSPO rules. However, the Council will work with our partners to ensure there is a joined-up approach which is fair, proportionate, reasonable, and uses all options available to address the anti-social behaviour.

Councils are required to consult with the public, along with relevant organisations and stakeholders, before making a PSPO and we would like to hear your views.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on:
a) whether or not people have experienced anti-social behaviour in the city centre
b) whether or not the Council should introduce a PSPO, and
c) what people think of the draft PSPO.

In general, we will expect one response from someone authorised to represent that organisation, but everyone can, and is encouraged to, take part in the survey in a personal capacity.
