This theme focuses on helping and supporting residents to live happy and healthy lives in the wards across the North East Local Area. Our aim is to provide more support and raise awareness by joining up services, promoting them and communicating activities in the area. In order to assess the needs of residents and to identify the gaps in support, we work with partners, residents, and services across the area.
Our priorities for this theme:
To help and support people to live an independent, fulfilled and happy life
To encourage and work together to improve access to health services for all
To improve leisure and sports facilities so that they meet the needs of all and are inclusive
To work together to provide more joined up support for vulnerable people
What we have delivered so far:
Defibrillators
The North-East Local Area Committee (LAC) have bought and fitted 10 defibrillators in the area. These are located on:
Hartley Brook Road
Four Greens Community Centre
127 Page Hall Road
Wolf Road Forum
Concord Golf Club
Margetson Crescent Thomas More
Wordsworth Avenue Mount Tabor
Verdon Street Recreation centre
Spital Hill Sorby House
Sicey Avenue Shiregreen Community Centre
The LAC contributed £100 to each community building holding a defibrillator as a contribution to the energy costs for around 3 years. We also pay for the replacement pads which are required each time after the unit has been activated and we have funded the replacement of vandalized units and cabinets.
We are pleased to say that these defibrillators have saved lives and have been used a total of 51 times between December and April.
If you spot an issue with any of these defibrillators, please contact northeastlac@sheffield.gov.uk and we will organize repairs as a matter of urgency.
People Keeping Well Initiative
The North-East LAC set up the People Keeping Well Initiative. As part of this, our ward pot funded healthy walks project in partnership with Step Out Sheffield. We funded healthy walks in Firth Park which were held weekly and led by trained volunteer leaders. The walks were open to all, but over 70% of Step Out Sheffield registered walkers were over 65. The weekly walks not only had great health benefits, but they also ended with a tea and a chat. For some, this was their only social interaction during the week. The walks cater for all people of varying abilities and take advantage of Sheffield’s many green spaces.
