Following the success of the Environmental Stewardship Pilot, we are delighted to be extending this project for another year. A rolling 12 week programme where six new young people who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) will spend 2 days a week with an AmeySupervisor clearing sites across the North East of Sheffield.
Their services include but are not limited to:
• repairing fencing
• repairing benches and other street furniture
• cutting back hedges
• painting out graffiti
• litter picking areas
• deep cleaning
Amey will also provide them with the necessary training for health and safety, and the young people will spend a further day developing their maths and English skills with the Lifelong Learning and Skills team.
As this is now a well-established project, we now have signage for the work vans and A-Boards displaying the Environmental Stewardship logo to advertise the wonderful work being done by these young people. Look of for these in your area!
The programme will continue providing a number of young people with valuable skills and confidence in environmental maintenance, a formal qualification and aim to create pride and ownership in the area.
"I am a participant on the Environmental Stewardship Programme. I have really enjoyed working outdoors and seeing a really positive change in my local community from the work we have been doing. Also learning a lot about grounds maintenance works from my supervisor. I know my confidence in myself and what I can achieve has really improved working with Lifelong Skill and Amey. I am hoping to join Amey later in the year as an apprentice."
A Steward, February 2024
My name is Shaun Cowan and I'm the city stewardship grounds maintenance supervisor for Amey. I've been with the company for over 10 years now and I love seeing the positive differences being made through this job. Some of the highlights are being able to pass on my skills and knowledge to the young trainees and seeing them progress and develop and grow in themselves through the job, the young trainees get to see the beginning, middle and the end results of the jobs that we have undertaken from neglected sites in the north of Sheffield. From the jobs we have done it's good to see the once neglected sites being reused for the community. We have received some positive feedback from local businesses in the area for example Tracey’s kitchen in Parsons Cross, the manager said it's good to see the neglected sites being given a new lease of life.
