Sheffield City Council's Parks & Countryside Service have access to funding via a s106 agreement (developer contribution) which will enable some improvements to be made to the Upper Hanover Playground's Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA*).
We want to raise the overall quality of the facility, encourage increased use, and enable more people to access the health and wellbeing benefits of using recreational facilities in our parks and greenspaces.
Following local engagement and subsequent development of designs for the improvements, construction work will now be starting the week commencing 27th January 2025 and lasting approximately 8 weeks.
The work aims to;
Enhancing appeal & playability
Incorporating improvements to make space safer, more welcoming and to make maintenance easier
Considering improvements to wider surroundings and make the space more welcoming
This will include the following;
removing existing surfacing and laying a new asphalt surface with appropriate line markings
adding basketball/football posts x2
amending fencing to allow for 2 lower sides,
stepped kerbs up the terrace towards the playground to create low level seating area
reconfigure the entrance from Upper Hanover St - including adding a pedestrian gate & maintenance vehicle gate
some work will also be undertaken on the retaining wall around the MUGA which requires some structural work - mainly repointing the wall
During the construction period the MUGA and some areas of the park will be fenced off to allow the improvements to be undertaken.
Due to the small size of the Upper Hanover Playground the contractors will be setting up a compound on some of the parking bays adjacent to the park on Upper Hanover Street.
We apologise for any inconvenience the works to site and associated contractor compound may cause.
* For context, a multi-use games area, or MUGA as it is commonly known, is a dedicated area for sport and activity, designed with a surface that will support a variety of sports in one location. They are predominantly used for training and recreational usage, and can be used by adults and children. These are often found in parks and other outdoor spaces across Sheffield.
