Street Tree Replacement to facilitate the building of Nether Edge Walking Wheeling and Cycle route - Charter Row, S1.

Consultation on the replacement of five street trees to facilitate the building of Nether Edge Walking Wheeling and Cycle route, on Charter Row, S1.

As part of a project called Nether Edge Wedge, changes need to be made to Charter Row, specifically, to the rear of Atkinsons.

To complete these works, large parts of the highway around the junction of Charter Row and Fitzwilliam Gate are to be rebuilt. During investigations for these works, a total of five street trees have been identified for replacement.

One portion of three trees (marked A on the below plan) need to be replaced to facilitate the building of the scheme. A second portion of two trees (marked B on the below plan) have suffered malicious vandalism and extensive ringbarking, which will severely limit their life expectancy.

As part of this project, it is being suggested that for each tree removed, it will be replaced on a 3-for-1 basis. This means that a total of 15 replants are to be proposed.

The five trees to be removed and seven of the 15 replant locations are indicated on the plan below. Another two replant locations are not in the vicinity of this scheme, but are proposed to support the Hinde House School Street project. We will work with the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership to identify six more appropriate locations.

This consultation is only about the removal and replacement of trees, and is not seeking opinions on the installation of the travel scheme. The public consultation on the scheme as a whole has already been run.


The species of the seven trees replanted in the area of Charter Row are to be a mixture of Ginkgo biloba (male) (Maidenhair tree) and Corylus corluna (Turkish Hazel). The two replants in the Hinde House School Street Project are to be one Crataegus laevigata (Woodland Hawthorn) and one Cornus mas (Cornelian cherry dogwood). We will work with the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership to identify six more appropriate species.
