Street Tree Replacement to facilitate Pedestrian Crossing - Herries Road
Consultation on the replacement of two young street trees to facilitate the building of two pedestrian crossings on Herries Road, S5.
Sheffield City Council have been investigating options to help pedestrians wishing to cross Herries Road in the vicinity of Parkwood Road North following requests from the public. There is currently a 600m stretch of Herries Road between the light controlled crossing near Teynham Road and the refuge at Shirecliffe Road roundabout without any facilities to aid pedestrians who may wish to access the bus stops, or walk or wheel to local facilities and schools.
This consultation is only about the removal and replacement of trees, and is not seeking opinions on the pedestrian refuges. The public consultation on the crossings and refuges has already been run. To submit a comment about the crossings specifically please send it to transport@sheffield.gov.uk.
The proposed pedestrian refuges shown on the attached design (both below and attached), would assist movements across Herries Road by enabling this to be done in two stages, rather than waiting for a clear gap in the traffic from both directions.
To facilitate the building of these crossings, it is proposed that two street trees are replaced. These are highlighted red in the above plan. Each of these trees will be replaced by two new plantings, highlighted green in the above plan, for a total of four replacements. It was originally suggested that the trees could be dug up and relocated, but unfortunately they are now too established and so will have to be replaced. The two fells, four replacements and the reasons for these have been submitted to and approved by Sheffield Street Tree Partnership.
The first tree, on the left of the diagram, is located opposite 516-518 Herries Road. It is currently an Elm (Ulmus 'Rebona'). We are proposing to replace it with two Kobushi magnolias (Magnolia kobus), which we will aim to plant in the verge opposite 480 Herries Road and opposite 474 Herries Road.
The second tree, on the right of the diagram, is located outside 491 Herries Road. It is currently a Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). We are proposing to replace it with one Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) and one Field Maple (Acer campestre). We are aiming to plant these in the verge opposite 518-520 Herries Road, and in the verge outside 499 Herries Road respectively.
More information on the proposed replacement species can be found below:
These species of tree have been selected by our professional arboricultural inspectors as being suitable highway tree species for these locations. This information can be found on page 199, 237 and 63 of the Tree Species Selection for Green Infrastructure, which can be found here:
Sheffield City Council have had requests for assistance crossing the road in this area. There is the opportunity to place pedestrian refuges within the hatching for the junction between Herries Road and Parkwood Road North. Providing one crossing on either side caters for the bus stops and school pedestrians to get across Herries Road in the most direct way and minimising the number of side road crossings required.
