School Streets is a new approach to improve road safety and air quality outside schools, whereby they are closed to traffic at the start and end of the school day. This helps to reduce congestion and improve air quality at the school gates, making it easier and safer to walk or cycle to school whilst creating a more pleasant environment for everyone.

There will be marshals managing the road closures using appropriate barriers and signage. Residents of these streets will be able to apply for a permit to give them access during the closure times.

Pye Bank C of E Primary School has been chosen to trial a School Street, road closure scheme. This is because of ongoing problems with drivers parking dangerously, illegally, and inconsiderately. This puts all pupils’ safety at risk.

How will the School Street work?

  • Montford Drive and part of Lopham Street will be made one-way (See planned one-way below)
  • During the School Street closure the one-way system will be closed to vehicular traffic via a barrier on Montford Drive at it's junction with Andover Street.
  • The closure will operate Monday to Friday, term time only.
  • Closure times will be 8:15 to 9:15am in the morning and 14:45 to 15:45pm in the afternoon.
  • During these times vehicular traffic will not be allowed to enter Montford Drive or Lopham Street via the closure point (exemptions do apply).
  • Residents living within the closed section of roads will always have access via a (free) permit scheme.
