Sheffield City Council are developing proposals to create a brand-new walking and cycling route that will connect Oughtibridge Valley estate to the heart of Oughtibridge village. The proposals include upgrading the existing track to the Forge Lane sports ground, construction of a new walking and cycling bridge over the River Don, and a new surfaced track that will provide a quicker, safer, more convenient way for people to access local shops, amenities and green space. The new link will also help to reduce traffic and parking pressures in and around Oughtibridge.
The council are now working with specialist contractor, Eric Wright Group, who will develop detailed designs for the project. The key challenge is to understand how the bridge will be designed and constructed to secure full planning permission. We also need to refine plans including timelines and costs to develop and construct the full route. We expect the detailed design stage of the project to be completed by early 2026. Subject to final costs, details and planning approvals, we aim to start construction in summer 2026.
The project is part funded through a developer contribution, which was agreed as part of the original planning application for the 300-home development. We’ve agreed to use further funding from UK Government to construct the route. This is funding specifically allocated for improvements that support active and sustainable transport choices locally, regionally and nationwide.
The map below highlights the route alignment. This links to the proposed riverside route within the development to the north (the dotted red line), which is separate to this funded scheme.
Part of the route will be created by resurfacing the existing private vehicle track from Forge Lane to the sports pitches to the north. Passing places along Forge Ln will improve safety for route users. New sections of the route will be constructed to link Forge Lane, the bridge and the proposed riverside route within the housing development.
