August 2026 update: works at West Bar roundabout

Update on West Bar roundabout works

These works have been delayed until Easter 2027.

This is due to delays at the Tenter Street site in relation to the kerbing work and difficulty working in the heat, which affected concrete curing. This has delayed the start date at West Bar, and would have caused works to run over our 2-week timeframe.

Our contractor, Sisk, is committed to completing the work, however, to avoid overrunning into the busy term-time period, delaying the works is the best solution.

We will be carrying out improvement work to the West Bar roundabout from Monday 17 August.

The work involves raising the roundabout's kerb perimeter with more robust materials. At the same time, we are also investing further in surfacing to make it clearer for drivers where the main running lane is around the roundabout.

The raised kerb will encourage slower speeds for people driving around it, but will still allow larger vehicles to use the roundabout.

Our contractor Sisk will do the work, and we expect it to last for two weeks.

These changes are part of the work we have done in Kelham Island and Neepsend, to transform streets into safer and more pleasant spaces
and make walking, wheeling and cycling easier in the area.

Road closures and diversions

To ensure our teams can work safely and to ensure safety of both road users and pedestrians, the roundabout will be closed during the works.

The Tenter Street and Corporation Street approaches to the roundabout will be closed and a signed diversion route will be in place. West Bar access to the roundabout will remain open. This will ensure that traffic can continue to flow through the area, allow vehicle access to Tenter Street and enable the bus services along the route to operate a normal service - although they may be slightly diverted.

We have explored alternative options with Sisk to keep the roundabout fully open, but on-and-off closures would affect the quality of the works and triple the time it would take to complete.

Pedestrian routes will be unaffected while we work.

We have timed these works to take place during the summer holidays to reduce disruption and appreciate your patience whilst we complete these critical works.
