Update - 9th April 2024

Planning permission has been granted following approval at the Planning Committee which took place on the 2nd April 2024. Parks & Countryside will be working closely with Courtside CIC as this development moves forward into construction, we will update here when key information is available to keep you informed about progress.

Overview

Sheffield City Council have been developing plans for a Multi-Activity Hub within Hillsborough Park. The aim of the activity hub is to improve the tennis courts and wider recreational offer of this City park by bringing people together and encouraging them to be physically and socially active in a high-quality green space.

The Council is working with its partner, Courtside CIC (Please see FAQs Who are Courtside CIC?) to create the activity hub, bringing investment and redevelopment of the tennis courts and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). The proposed location for the hub is on the footprint of the existing MUGA and tennis courts, this along with the proposed layout design can be viewed in further detail in the site plans (.png/.pdf formats) contained in the ‘Documents’ section to the right.

Hillsborough Park has been identified as the most suitable place in Sheffield for the activity hub currently for a number of reasons including good transport and access links and the park servicing the whole of Sheffield. In addition the park’s existing MUGA is in need of investment to ensure it remains fit for park visitors to use.

What facilities will the hub have?

  • 3 full-sized resurfaced and remarked tennis courts with high quality considerate floodlighting, which will continue to be ‘pay and play’
    • One of these courts will have netball markings
  • A resurfaced and redesigned 'free to use' MUGA with football & basketball markings also benefiting from high quality considerate floodlighting
  • A 9-hole mini golf course, which will be ‘pay and play’
  • An open central space, freely accessible by all for exercise, spectating and socialising
  • 2 covered padel courts, which will be ‘pay and play’ (Please see FAQs What is Padel Tennis?)
  • A new cafe created with indoor and outdoor seating and publicly accessible toilets

    Update from Courtside at Hillsborough

Having had planning permission for the Hillsborough hub in Hillsborough Park unanimously granted back in April 2024, and appointing a local construction company, JBP construction, in June 2024, we are now ready to begin work on site. We plan to commence the build in early August 2024 with a view to complete in winter 2024.

The approved plans for the development include a community café with indoor and outdoor seating, public access toilets, indoor activity space, 3x full-size tennis courts, 2x covered padel courts and a mix of other outdoor recreational facilities including netball, 3x3 basketball and football. New LED court lighting will encourage year-round play. These developments will not only improve community facilities, with the help of park landscaping improvements, our plans will achieve a biodiversity net gain of 540% at Hillsborough Park.

We know that change is not always easy, but it brings new opportunities. We also know that we have done all we can to consider the needs of different people, young and old, able-bodied and disabled, active and inactive, designing facilities fit for the future while preserving the heritage of Hillsborough Park. Despite the short-term inconvenience that is inevitable during the construction phase, by upgrading the existing facilities we will better be able to welcome and support the people of Hillsborough.

During the build, the park and many of its facilities will be open as usual. We hope you’re as excited about the improvements being made to Hillsborough Park as we are, and we look forward to welcoming you upon completion.
