Bold new vision for the Valley

Our Vision for the Valley sets out ambitious joint approach to regeneration
A bold new vision for the regeneration of Gleadless Valley has been developed in partnership with the community that will benefit from the work.
The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Board – set up by Sheffield City Council – is proud to share Our Vision for the Valley.
It promises to deliver lasting benefits for residents and the wider city. This visionary programme, developed in partnership with local community organisations, sets out 12 major projects to be delivered over the next decade, aiming to make Gleadless Valley a thriving, welcoming neighbourhood once again.

The board still has work to do to secure the final funding for some of the projects. But, the Vision is for:
- Around 1,100 new homes and upgrades to hundreds more, including energy-efficient improvements
- Three new or improved community centres and vibrant local hubs for shopping, work, and socialising
- Four new or improved parks, making the most of the Valley’s famously unique and stunning landscape
- Thousands of residents supported into jobs, apprenticeships, and training, with a focus on local enterprise and skills
- Cleaner, safer streets through innovative place management and environmental stewardship
- Improved public transport and walking/cycling routes, connecting people to opportunities across Sheffield
This Vision will directly improve the quality of life for Gleadless Valley residents. Families will enjoy better homes, safer streets, and more green spaces. The new community centres will offer places to meet, learn, and access vital services. It prioritises local jobs, training, and business opportunities, helping residents build brighter futures. Enhanced transport and walking routes will make it easier for everyone to get around, while environmental projects will protect and celebrate the Valley’s unique natural heritage.
The vision will be going to Strategy and Resources Policy Committee on 10 December 2025, if you want to read the draft document please click this link.

Young people re-imagine the future of Gleadless Valley at the North Star event

Last week, students from Springs Academy took the lead in presenting and facilitating a creative workshop at the North Star event. As part of our ongoing engagement with young people across the Valley, the session was co-created by HLM Architects, Springs Academy and the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team. The Springs students then delivered it to 18 different schools throughout the day.
Each visiting school gathered around a giant map of Gleadless Valley and were invited to think like architects and designers. What makes a great place to live? How could the Valley look and feel in 20 years? Using models, recycled materials and plenty of imagination, they built ideas ranging from community gardens to youth spaces, shops, parks and new ways to move around the area.
The Springs Academy students introduced the activity, explained the themes that shape the real regeneration project and supported their peers in turning ideas into small 3D models. They kept the sessions moving, answered questions and created a welcoming, energetic atmosphere.
Some highlights from the day included:
- Greener, safer walking routes
- New community spaces for families and young people
- Creative ideas for local shops and services
- Models showing how unused or tired spaces could be brought back to life
Two examples of the designs the students came up with, showing handmade models of a house on wheels, a woodland cafe, a wind turbine and a Big Tesco
What stood out most was the leadership shown by the Springs students. This wasn’t just another school activity. They played a genuine role in helping other young people explore what the future of their neighbourhood could look like.
We’ll be meeting with the Springs Academy group again soon so they can choose a winning idea from all the schools involved. The plan is for them to run the workshop again for their peers and other year groups, helping even more young people get involved in shaping the future of Gleadless Valley.
A huge thank you to HLM Architects, Springs Academy and all the students who brought such creativity and energy to the day.

Local Litterpicking
On Saturday 5th September 2025, we joined Iren, Rob and Kev for a litter pick. We started out on Blackstock Road, picking and clearing as we went and emptying some of the overflowing bins. We finished up at Spotswood Close where we managed to clear the end of the road – the before and after photos say it all!:
Big thanks to Iren, Kev and Rob for their dedication and hard work to Gleadless Valley. -

Exciting Plans Taking Shape for the Future of Gleadless Valley
Big things are happening in Gleadless Valley – and the local community is at the heart of it all
The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Programme is now gathering pace, with refreshed plans being developed to improve homes, green spaces, local facilities, and job opportunities – all shaped by the people who live and work in the area.
Originally launched in 2022 and led by Sheffield City Council’s Regeneration Team, the project is all about long-term change driven by local voices. A major milestone was reached in August 2024 when the Leader of the Council apologised for the uncertainty residents had experienced through delays in delivering the masterplan and the Council’s Strategy & Resources Committee gave the green light to review and refresh the original masterplan, unlocking the next exciting chapter for the Valley.
A New Beginning: The Regeneration PlanAt the centre of this new phase is the Regeneration Plan – a bold and practical roadmap for the next ten years. It’s being developed to turn shared ambitions into real-life projects to transform the valley. It will:
- Set out clear priorities and timeframes for improvements to homes, public spaces, and local services
- Attract investment and new partnerships to help fund projects
- Give communities, councillors and partners a shared vision to work towards
Shaped by the Community
The plan builds on years of community conversations. From online chats to local workshops, residents have been sharing their hopes, frustrations and ideas. That feedback – along with housing and planning data – is currently with design experts employed by the council to develop into a costed ‘feasibility’ plan. This will enable us to start to make important decisions on where to begin our investment in improving homes, communities and green spaces.
What Happens Next?
Over the summer, the design experts at HLM Architects and Arup are working closely with the Regeneration Team and the community to create detailed design options and costings for priority areas.
In August and September, residents will have the chance to get involved again – through social media, local groups, neighbourhood tours and doorstep conversations. The design team will be back in the Valley, listening, learning and testing ideas.
Then, in October and November, those ideas will come back to community members and the Regeneration Board for review. Once we’ve set the ambition, we’ll then need to take it out to the market and look to secure investors and developers who will make the plans a reality.
This will take time, but in the shorter term, 12 – 18 months, we will begin work on making the improvements needed to existing council homes.
Be Part of the JourneyThis is an exciting moment for Gleadless Valley. The Regeneration Plan is not just about bricks and mortar – it’s about creating a thriving, welcoming and sustainable neighbourhood for everyone.
Whether you're a resident, a business owner, or someone who loves the Valley – your voice matters. Look out for updates in the coming weeks and help shape the future of your community.
