This theme focuses on enhancing the environment to make it greener, cleaner, and safer for residents. Our approach involves collaborating with services, partners, and residents to identify areas within the North-East wards that require improvement and regeneration. We will implement pilot projects aimed at improving the street scene, supporting volunteers, and conducting educational and awareness campaigns on recycling, environmental sustainability, and public health.

Our priorities for this theme:

  • To maintain a clean local environment
  • To work together to promote responsible waste disposal and recycling
  • To help people be more environmentally friendly and sustainable
  • To tackle the environmental health issues across the area

Ongoing Projects:

Little Pickers

The North-East LAC is working with schools across the 4 wards to raise awareness around local environmental issues. As part of this project, we deliver in-school sessions around littering and its environmental impact. The LAC supplies the schools with litter picking bags containing equipment such as high-vis vests, gloves, litter picks, hoops, bags, a mascot teddy and a book for children to record their litter picking experiences. The aim is to encourage young people to go on litter picks in their community with their family and friends.

So far, we have delivered sessions in Hartley Brook Primary School and Meynell Primary school and we will be starting our work with Whiteways Primary School in September.

Green Network

The Green Network incorporates the 'Friends of' groups, the Litter Picking groups, the Allotment Societies and any volunteers working in green spaces. This is a platform where groups can showcase the wonderful work that they are doing as well as invite new members to join them. It is a space for groups to direct people to their upcoming events, and conduct consultations linked to a specific theme that will benefit their cause or their area.

Our first Green Network event took place on Wednesday 25th September 2024. Lots of volunteers and came along as well as Amey and Parks, and some great networking took place. The meeting was well attended by groups such as Friends of groups, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Allotment groups, Clean Air and Green City Action. We were also joined by the Sheffield City Council Estate Team, Amey, Parks and Countryside, Sheffiled Museum and Cllr Safiya Saeed.

We discussed what groups do really well and what issues that they need help with. We also created a list of the services that could be involved in future meetings.

Litter Pickers & Volunteers

We are continuing with the Litter Picking Project which aims to promote a cleaner, more looked-after Local Area. We have free litter picking equipment available to anyone wanting to litter pick or anyone involved in litter picking with a 'Friends of' group or litter picking group. The equipment includes: trugs, hoops, gloves, rakes, wire cutters, secateurs, loopers, trolleys, yard brushes, high-vis and stickers.

If you or anyone you know are interested in keeping their community clean, you can now access free litter picking equipment from participating local libraries (Firth Park Library, Parsons Cross Library). If you know any groups or volunteers who would benefit from some litter picking equipment, please get in touch with the LAC team.

To promote cleaner streets in the North-East Local Area, Sheffield City Council and its Local Areas have teamed up with Sheffield artist Luke Horton to encourage people to take their litter home. This approach has had a positive impact, which is why we hope to develop this further. Look out for more advertising!
