What is the purpose of the Connecting Sheffield: Burngreave project?

Connecting Sheffield: Burngreave aims to make local streets safer, more accessible and more pleasant for people. We want to make it easier for people who are walking, wheeling or using the bus to get around.

How will the proposals improve walking and wheeling?

Continuous footways and improved vehicle access crossings give clearer priority to people who are walking or wheeling. They make junctions easier and safer to cross by slowing traffic down. People walking and wheeling don’t need to step down into the road and back up onto the pavement. Instead, a raised pavement across the junction acts like a road hump to slow vehicles down.

Will any roads be closed to vehicles?

Yes. We plan to close two side road junctions to vehicles. The closures are at the junction of Pilgrim Street and Nottingham Street, and the junction where Nottingham Street meets Rock Street and Catherine Street. People who are walking, wheeling or cycling will still be able to travel through and access to proerties will be maintained.

    How will bus journeys improve?

Bus-friendly road humps will improve comfort for bus passengers and reduce vehicle speeds. They will also provide safer places for people to cross. Raised kerbs, tactile paving and clearer markings at bus stops will make it easier for people to get on and off buses, especially people with limited mobility.

Clearer markings will also help to stop people parking at bus stops and make journeys more reliable. This will allow buses to pull up to the kerb at bus stops, which will make it easier and safer for passengers to get on and off the bus.

Will access to homes and businesses be affected?

We will make sure people can access their homes, and that customers can get to local businesses. Some vehicle routes will change due to junction closures, but all addresses will remain accessible.

Will these proposals reduce pavement parking?

Yes. New parking restrictions aim to stop people parking on pavements and at junctions. Improving visibility at junctions will make roads and streets safer for everyone. Reducing pavement parking will also make it easier and safer to walk and wheel on the pavement. This includes for wheelchair users or parents with pushchairs.

How will the plans affect drivers?

The changes mean some drivers may need to take slightly different routes or park in new places. This is because we plan to close two junctions to vehicles. We also plan to introduce new rules that stop people parking on pavements and near junctions. But drivers will still be able to reach every home and business.

The improvements on Rock Street and Nottingham Street will make driving easier, smoother, and safer. With fewer cars turning in and out of side roads, less on‑street parking and by removing buildouts, traffic will move more freely.

New bus‑friendly speed humps and continuous footways will help slow vehicles safely while reducing bumps and discomfort for drivers and passengers.

Stopping people parking on pavements and near junctions will make it easier for drivers to see what’s ahead. This will help reduce the risk of collisions too.

How long will construction take and when will it start?

After the consultation, we will need to go through a Traffic Regulation Order process. If the proposals are approved, we expect to start construction in early 2027.
