Overnight works – 16 June 2026

Thank you for your patience as we continue our work to transform our city centre.

We are making more space for people, and making the city centre a more attractive place for people to stop, relax and spend time. The feedback about the new pedestrian crossings at the junction of Rockingham Street and West Street – as well as the extra pavement space outside the bars in the area - has been positive.

We are also giving you more choice in how you travel by improving facilities for bus passengers and making journeys into the city centre more reliable. We are improving links to key destinations too by making walking, wheeling and cycling easier and safer.

As part of this transformation, we are working overnight on Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 June in different areas of the city centre.

We will remove existing lines overnight on Tuesday 16 June. We will install new lines on the nights of Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 June.

Work will start at 8pm, apart from on West Street where work start after the last tram has passed.

We will actively look to reduce the level of disruption caused by these works by having some rolling road closures. But please do be aware of our teams working in these areas.

Rockingham Street from West Street to Broad Lane

We are introducing a loading bay, Pay & Display parking and a Blue Badge bay.

The work we have done to improve pedestrian safety around the evening venues on West Street have affected loading and taxi provision on West Street.

To counter those impacts, we are introducing a new loading bay on Rockingham Street near the junction with Portobello Street which can be used from 5am to 8.30pm. From 8.30pm to 5am, the loading bay will operate as a taxi rank.

West Street between Mappin Street and Orange Street

We are introducing evening taxi ranks and a loading bay.

There are two existing Pay & Display parking bays on the side of West Street travelling towards the city centre that currently have no restrictions between 8.30pm and 8am.

There is also a taxi rank on the side travelling out of the city centre that is limited to 6.30pm to 6am, with no waiting between 6am and 6.30pm.

The Pay & Display bays will remain during the day and will become taxi ranks between 8.30pm and 8am.

The taxi rank will on the other side of the road will remain between 8.30pm and 5am, and will then operate as a loading bay between 5am and 8.30pm.

This will make loading and servicing easier for businesses along that section of West Street.

Leopold Street between Church Street and Orchard Street

We will remove the old bus stop and introduce loading bays and Blue Badge parking.

As buses have been rerouted to serve Arundel Gate and Rockingham Street, we have already removed the old bus shelter at the stop outside All Bar One on Leopold Street.

We will convert the old bus layby to a loading bay from midnight to 10am. It will operate as a Blue Badge parking bay from 10am to midnight. These works are being done ahead of the wider public space upgrades proposed by the Connecting Sheffield: Townhead and Leopold Street project.

This will formalise the way this area is currently being used by businesses, and will introduce additional Blue Badge parking in the city centre.

Rockingham Lane from West Street to Division Street

We will introduce no waiting at any time and no loading restrictions.

Currently Rockingham Lane has a no waiting from 8am to 8.30pm restriction in place, with no restrictions from 8.30pm to 8am.

The street is very narrow and, combined with the evening closure of Carver Street and changes to Rockingham Street, the current restriction has caused problems for businesses on Rockingham Street, and for other traffic including taxis.

We will introduce no wating at any time restrictions on both sides, and a no loading at any time restriction on the side opposite The Circle.

This will allow loading on The Circle side which will mean businesses will still have access to loading and servicing facilities, but will remove parking that can obstruct traffic during the evening period where it is currently unrestricted.

Division Lane

We will remove the existing single yellow line and introduce a restricted parking zone. This will mean that if you park in this area you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice – even when there are no lines on the ground.

The bus hub next to Pounds Park includes a continuous footway across the junction with Division Lane, which does not have any waiting restrictions marked.

People are parking close to the junction which can restrict visibility and accessibility for others.

People also park on the narrower sections of the road in this area, which can make access to the car park difficult.

The new restricted parking zone will prevent this type of parking without the need for yellow lines. It will also keep the rest of the road clear of parked vehicles so that businesses and the car park are accessible.
