Furnival Gate changes to make bus journeys more reliable - August 2026

People travelling by bus in Sheffield city centre will benefit from quicker and more reliable journeys when we introduce new bus priority measures on Furnival Gate this September.

As part of the Connecting Sheffield:City Centre project, we will introduce a new bus gate on Furnival Gate near the top of Matilda Way. The new bus gate will also coordinate with the existing bus gate, at the bottom of Pinstone Street, coming back into operation following the diversions that have been in place while we have been working on Pinstone Street.

Both bus gates are due to become operational on 19 September.

The changes are designed to help buses move more efficiently through the city centre by reducing delays caused by through-traffic. This will make journeys more reliable for the thousands of people who rely on public transport every day.

Bus gates allow buses to travel more freely along key routes, helping passengers reach jobs, education, shops, leisure facilities and other destinations more quickly. Taxis, cyclists and authorised vehicles will also be able to use the bus gates.

The measures support our wider ambition to create a cleaner, greener and better-connected city centre by enabling more people to choose public transport for more journeys.

Changes for drivers

There are still more than 9,000 parking spaces available across Sheffield city centre. And all car parks are accessible during the work we are doing to improve the city centre.

But there will be changes to some driving routes. Drivers travelling from Park Square via Arundel Gate to reach car parks on Charter Row, Moore Street or Rockingham Street - including Atkinsons and the Wellington Street NCP - will need to follow a different route once the new bus gate is in place.

Access to Charter Row will instead be via the Inner Ring Road at Moore Street roundabout.

To help people adjust to the change, drivers who enter the new bus gate at the top of Matilda Way will receive a warning letter for their first offence during the first six months after it becomes operational.

This arrangement will not apply to the existing bus gate at the bottom of Pinstone Street when it is switched back on, so please make sure you look out for signs if you are travelling in the area.

Construction work underway

We are now working on preparations for the bus gate becoming operational.

Construction started in July, and will continue until the end of August to build a traffic island at the top of Matilda Way. During this time, one of the bus stops on Moorhead will be temporarily suspended, with services using a nearby stop instead. We will keep residents and businesses in the area up to date ahead of the changes, including details of alternative routes for drivers and temporary arrangements during construction.

The Furnival Gate improvements form part of the wider Connecting Sheffield: City Centre project, which is improving public transport and making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle around the city centre.
