Construction to start this month - October 26
Construction on the Connecting Sheffield: Castle Street project will start during the week commencing 12 October 2026.
The project will make it easier and safer for people using public transport, walking, wheeling or cycling to move around the area. It is part of our wider city centre transformation, it will:
- create more space for people
- give people genuine choice in how they travel
- improve access to the new Castle Hill Park.
The improvements include:
- upgraded bus waiting facilities, including improved shelters and better journey information.
- new controlled pedestrian crossings to make crossing the road safer and easier.
- wider and improved footways to make walking and wheeling easier and safer.
- a new two-way cycle route connecting with other city centre routes.
- easier access to the new Castle Hill Park and the surrounding area.
Together, these changes will help create a more welcoming, accessible and people-friendly city centre environment.
Work begins this month
The first phase of construction will focus on the junction of Castle Street, Waingate and Haymarket.
We will remove the existing central island on Waingate. We will also do some drainage and underground ducting works to prepare for the new junction layout and public space improvements.
So our teams can work safely, Waingate will be closed to uphill traffic in this first phase, which we expected to run until early November.
We will maintain access for people walking and wheeling while we work. The Castle Street taxi rank will be open during this phase too.
Keeping businesses moving
We are working closely with local businesses and residents to minimise disruption. We are making sure we keep access to shops and premises open. All businesses will be open while we work.
We will also need to move some bus stops temporarily. This will mean some services will use different stops, but there will be clear signage on affected stop. You can get up to date public transport information on the Travel South Yorkshire website too.
We know that some disruption during construction is unavoidable. But the long-term benefits will provide a more attractive area that is easier and safer to move around. The project will also contribute to a greener and better-connected transport network. It will support both city centre businesses and the growing Castlegate neighbourhood.
We will keep you up to date as the project progresses through this webpage.
Thank you for your contribution!
