May Progress Update

Part of our wider city centre transformation, Connecting Sheffield: Castle Street will improve facilities for bus passengers, including improved shelters and journey information. There will also be new pedestrian crossings to make walking and wheeling easier and safer, and a two-way cycle route will connect to other city centre routes. The plans will make it easier for everyone to access the new castle park site too.

Our plans for improvements to Castle Street were approved by Sheffield City Council’s Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee in December 2025, following public consultation.

Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), which would enable the taxi rank on Castle Street to be moved to Haymarket were approved in December 2025.

Following the results of our public consultation, we have updated our plans and you can see the changes here.


The changes included:

  • Following on from engagement with the Access Laison Group and the wider public consultation, we have changed the uncontrolled pedestrian crossings of the cycle route to zebra crossings.
  • Signage will be included to direct taxi users to the new rank location.

We are finalising plans for construction and, subject to funding approvals, we expect to start work in this summer.

Before we start, we will need to dig some holes in the pavement and the road to help us understand what pipes and services are under the ground. This will help inform construction. We expect to do this work in overnight on Sunday 28 June to minimise disruption to buses during the day.

Some of the work may be noisy, and we apologise in advanced for any inconvenience.

We will make sure all properties are accessible, and make sure all areas are usable again in the morning.


Next Steps

We are at the next stage of funding approvals with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, and we have should have a decision by June 2026.
