Abbeydale Road Bannerdale junction works - January 2025

We are preparing to start the next phase of work on the Connecting Sheffield: Abbeydale Road and Ecclesall Road project.

On Monday 20 January, we'll begin work to improve bus reliability on Abbeydale Road to make bus travel a more realistic alternative for people along this key route in the city.

We’ll be working at the Bannerdale Road junction to lay ducting which will house the cables for bus priority along Abbeydale Road. We will close the bus lane to complete the works, so there will be no road closures or diversions.

When the work is complete, it will mean that traffic signals will be able to detect buses better, and react accordingly to give buses priority. This will improve bus journey reliability and make travel by bus a more realistic option for people using this route.

You might remember that we removed the pedestrian crossings we initially proposed at the junction near the access road to the church, as they wouldn’t meet current guidance. We’re looking at alternative options to provide crossing(s) here in the future.

Work will also begin further along Abbeydale Road on Monday 3 February, at the junction with Tesco. Initially, we will install temporary traffic lights which will use the same signal routine as the permanent lights. This will allow us to remove the permanent lights so we can alter the island they currently stand on. Changing the island will mean we are prepared for changing the road layout so the bus lane can bypass the lights, giving buses priority over other traffic and ensuring better reliability.

We expect the work at the Bannerdale Road junction and the Tesco junction to be completed in December 2025.
