October 2025 update

Since the close of the public consultation on 7 November 2024, the project team have reviewed the feedback received during the consultation and made the following design changes ahead of the scheme being brought forward:

  • Millhouses Lane: the proposal to close Millhouses Lane to all vehicle traffic has been removed from this phase of the scheme.
  • Psalter Lane: as well as the proposed signal-controlled pedestrian crossing already in the scheme design, vehicles travelling away from Hunter’s Bar Roundabout will no longer be able to turn left into Psalter Lane. This restriction is needed to ensure that pedestrians can use the new signalised crossing safely.
  • Cortworth Road: the proposed new crossing near the junctions with Cortworth Road and Hoober Road has been removed from this phase of the scheme.
  • Abbey Lane: the proposed new footway near the junction with Abbey Lane has been removed from this phase of the scheme.
  • 30mph limit: the new boundary for the 30mph limit on Ecclesall Road South will now begin outside Broomcroft House near the junction with Abbey Lane, rather than near the junction with Whirlowdale Road.

The full proposals can be seen here:

We are now advertising the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) and Speed Limit Orders (SLOs) needed to implement the scheme. You can find full details of these Orders on:

You can have your say on the Orders between 23 October 2025 and 20 November 2025 by responding through the Appyway site at https://consultation.appyway.com/sheffield, or by emailing orders@sheffield.gov.uk. If you’d like to comment to share your support or object to the Orders, please respond with your reasons by 20 November.

If you have any general questions or enquiries on the scheme, you can contact our Engagement Team at:

  • Email: info@a625roadsafety.com
  • Freephone: 0808 281 3514
  • Freepost: Freepost A625 SAFER ROADS

These channels will be monitored from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

We’d like to issue a correction to information shared in a recent letter advertising the changes and the Orders. The new 30mph limit boundary will be near the junction of Ecclesall Road South with Abbey Lane, rather than with Whirlowdale Road. We apologise for any confusion this may cause.

We received many comments in the public consultation from people sharing their concerns about road safety at other junctions along the route. Although we cannot address all these concerns as part of this scheme, we have passed them on to the scheme design team, to be considered in the development of future projects in the area.

We’ll continue to keep you informed as the scheme progresses, and will share further updates here on the project website.

May 2025 update

Following the public consultation on the A625 Safer Roads Scheme that closed on 7 November 2024, the project team have been carefully reviewing all the feedback received. The consultation generated a wide range of views from residents, businesses, community groups and road users, and we’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their comments and suggestions. Once the project team have reviewed all the feedback received during the consultation, the revised proposals will be submitted to Sheffield City Council’s Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee for review.

We’ll continue to keep you informed as the scheme progresses, and will share further updates here on the project website.

Project information

We are bringing forward proposals for a new road safety project along a 3.5 mile stretch of the A625, Ecclesall Road and Ecclesall Road South. It includes Ecclesall Road, one of the city’s most prominent locations for retail, dining and leisure as well as residential suburbs featuring a large number of family homes. Parents and school children use the footways alongside the A625 to walk to and from school.

Research by the independent Road Safety Foundation has found that the A625 is one of the 27 urban roads with the highest rates of road traffic collisions in the UK. To improve safety on the road, the Department for Transport has provided Sheffield City Council with funding of £1.425 million to design and deliver the project.

The proposed safety measures fall within two main sections of the route:

  1. Between the Pear Street Junction / Champs Sports Bar and Grill (near to the inner ring road), to Hunter's Bar Roundabout (in each direction); and
  2. Between Hunter's Bar Roundabout and the junction with Whirlowdale Road in Whirlow (in each direction).

The proposed measures include new average speed cameras installed at key points along the route, vehicle-activated speed signs, new and upgraded pedestrian crossings, remodelling some road junctions, reduced speed limits along parts of the route, as well as improvements to signage and pedestrian footways.
